I was looking for songs that immediately took me to a different place while writing – using music as a shortcut to the ‘feel’ I was striving for in the narrative voice. The songs that were most evocative of space tended to have a lot of reverb, a repetitive motif, and were slightly minimal, like the dark landscape of space might be, with perhaps the bleeping of an air monitor ticking down, or a flashing warning light. The other half of the playlist is about falling in love, and the sort of madness that is particular to first love – the obsession, the all-consuming desire, and the heartbreak.
